Design before you buy

Bathroom Design & Layout Planning

The most expensive bathroom mistakes are made on paper. A good designer measures the room, tests layouts to scale and gives you drawings and a schedule you can build from. Tell us about your room and we’ll try to pass your enquiry to an independent designer.

What to ask for

What a bathroom design service should cover

Planning that answers the awkward questions before work starts.

  1. 01

    Measured survey

Walls, windows, soil stack, ceiling heights and existing services recorded accurately.

  2. 02

    Layout options

Different arrangements of bath, shower, WC and basin drawn to scale with clearances checked.

  3. 03

    Elevations & tile plans

Wall drawings show tile heights, niches, mirror positions and where fittings sit.

  4. 04

    Product schedules

A list of fittings and finishes with sizes, so you or your fitter can order correctly.

  5. 05

    En-suites & loft bathrooms

Planning for sloping ceilings, tight footprints and new drainage routes.

  6. 06

    Accessible bathrooms

Layouts with level-access showers, grab rail positions and space to move.

Drawing it properly

Hand-checked plans and clear drawings

Scaled plans and elevations show how each layout works, including door swings, clearances and drainage. Ask any designer what you’ll receive: careful measured drawings are more useful to a fitter than photo-realistic renders.

  • Clearances checked around every fitting
  • Soil and waste routes considered early
  • Drawings any competent fitter can follow
Why design first

Fewer surprises once work begins

Time spent planning is cheaper than changes on site.

Accurate to the room

Every option should be drawn from real measurements.

Products that fit

Sizes should be checked before anything is ordered.

Honest about constraints

A good designer will tell you if a layout won’t drain or won’t fit.

Use it with any fitter

Ask for a pack you can use with whichever installer you choose.

Designed around you

Height, mobility and daily routine should shape the layout.

Check insurance for installation

Designers and fitters work independently of this site. If someone also installs, ask for proof of insurance before work is booked.

Notes

Bathroom design questions

What to expect from a bathroom design service.

Will I get 3D renders?
It depends on the designer. Scaled plans and elevations show precisely how a room fits together; if you want visualisations too, ask before you agree a fee.
Can I use the design with my own fitter?
Yes. Drawings and a schedule should be prepared so any competent installer can price and build from them. Check this with the designer.
Do I have to buy products from the designer?
Not usually. A schedule lists suitable products, and you can often buy them wherever you choose; ask the designer how they work.
How many layout options will I get?
Usually two or three, depending on how much the room allows. Agree this with the designer when you book.
Can a bathroom be designed in a loft?
Yes. Head height, drainage routes and floor structure should be considered from the start.
Can the design include accessibility features?
Yes, such as level-access showers, wider doors and space for grab rails. Mention any needs in your enquiry.
How long does the design take?
It depends on the size of the project and how quickly decisions are made. Ask the designer for a timescale.
Can the same firm install?
Some designers offer design only; others also quote for installation. Say which you’d prefer in your enquiry.
Will the designer or fitter be insured?
Each designer and fitter works independently and we can’t vouch for their cover. If anyone carries out installation work, ask for proof of insurance before work is booked.
